Stillwater -
Broken Arrow High School ended an eight-year reign of baseball championships by Owasso and Union this summer and now they hope to end an even longer stranglehold on football when they play three-time defending state champion Union in Stillwater tonight.
The Tigers are 12-and-1, with their only loss coming September 16th in a 21-14 setback to the Redskins. In that game, Broken Arrow led 14-7 at halftime before Union rallied with a pair of second half touchdowns.
It was the second straight season the Tigers had a halftime lead on their rivals only to lose.
It could be said BA is playing the best football right now. Having beaten Jenks 31-21 six weeks ago, no team since has been within 13 points of the Tigers since.
Union, after blowing out Southmoore in the opening round of the playoffs, has posted one-point victories over Edmond North and Jenks to make it to the title game.
Tonight's game will be played at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. A win would give the Tigers their first state championship in the sport and would end a 15-year drought for the 62 schools in Class 6A not named Union or Jenks.
