Kai Callins scored two second half touchdowns as Guthrie took down fellow unbeaten Lawton MacArthur 24-to-7 Friday at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater.
The Bluejays (14-0) went to halftime ahead 7-0 after a 25-yard touchdown pass from Bryan Dutton to Donovan Jordan in the first quarter, but took control in the third.
Callins' 56-yard interception return with 6:05 left in the third made it 17-0. Then, when Lawton Mac needed a stop late in the fourth, Callins sealed the win with a 49-yard touchdown run.
Lawton Mac's lone touchdown came in the third quarter on a 27-yard touchdown pass from Taylor Chasteen to Quinton Paras that cut Guthrie's lead to 17-7. The Highlanders also scored an apparent touchdown in the fourth quarter, but a holding penalty negated it and a field goal attempt was off the mark.
It was the capper of a crazy season for the Bluejays. Just days before the playoffs began, the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association forced Guthrie to forfeit eight games for use of an ineligible player.
The ruling would have kept Guthrie out of the playoffs. But, the team won an appeal that restored the team's wins and allowed them to compete. The ineligible player remained suspended as did head coach Rafe Watkins.
This is Guthrie's third state championship. The Bluejays last won in 2007 and also took home the gold ball in 2002.
MacArthur (13-1) was looking for its first state title. It was the team's first trip to the title game since falling 14-10 to Carl Albert in 2006.
