It comes as no surprise that Oklahoma State billionaire donor Boone Pickens wants a college football playoff.
Pickens spoke with Brian Sullivan of CNBC Monday about the latest predicament as his Oklahoma State Cowboys finished third in the BCS rankings behind LSU and Alabama, thanks to the human polls -- some of whose voters had OSU as low as sixth.
"The BCS keeps getting itself in a spot where the outcome always seems to be questioned," Pickens says. "Everybody says, 'well we ought to go to a playoff', and I agree with that. I think you should go to a playoff. But, the BCS is peculiar because if you round up a bunch of people to vote for you, you've got a better chance of winning."
Sullivan asked Pickens if he would consider sponsoring a playoff game, a "Boone Pickens championship", should LSU beat Alabama and Oklahoma State beat Stanford in the Fiesta Bowl.
"That's an interesting idea and I saw somebody was talking about that last night and said really what should happen is that we should play Alabama and Stanford play LSU and then the winners play," he said.
"But, you've got to put up the money to do it, Boone," Sullivan responded.
"Oh, the money, I tell you there would be so much money put on that game," challenged Pickens. "Can you imagine extending another game? Another championship game. Can you imagine opening up that?"
Pickens' Cowboys finished just 86-one-thousandths of a point behind Alabama in the BCS standings. Harris Poll voters comprised the majority of that deficit, with 16 voting Oklahoma State lower than third, including three voting them as low as sixth.
Had those 16 had OSU third, it would have moved Oklahoma State ahead of Alabama in the BCS poll and Boone Pickens would be talking more about oil than a college football playoff.
