A Tulsa company could have ties to terrorist groups. Ace Auto Leasing is listed in indictment papers from the United States government, their office is located on 11th street between Yale Avenue and Sheridan Road.
The U.S. government is claiming that 30 car dealerships around the country are involved in funding the terrorist group, Hezbollah which is a Lebanese militant group linked to terrorism.
Ace Auto Leasing Incorporated in Tulsa is one of the 30 car dealerships. The owner denied any wrongdoing initially, but did mention that they have done international business.
"The folks that are benefiting from this business is a terror group," says DEA Agent Derek Maltz.
"They are using U.S. interest and money to finance their nefarious activities," says Middle Eastern Studies Professor John Swails.
The U.S. government says Lebanese financial institutions wired more than $300 million into our country. It was all part of a money laundering scheme that included 30 car dealerships like Ace Auto Leasing Inc. Agent Maltz says the wired money would go to these car dealerships to buy used cars.
"The used cars being purchased in the United States are being shipped into West Africa and they are making 15, 20, 25% profit and the proceeds are all being sent back into Lebanon and Hezbollah is benefiting," says Maltz.
He says the investigation is still ongoing and it's questionable whether or not the dealership owners knew they were helping Hezbollah.
"We do not have detailed specific information on what these car dealership owners knew we will investigate it jointly with our partners in the United States and hopefully we will shut them down," says Maltz.
So in order to stop the cycle the FBI is slapping the dealerships with restraining orders. Professor of Middle Eastern studies John Swails says with the indictment papers out and restraining orders in place the government will have much more information at their disposal to investigate.
"Our own business channels are being used to finance not only illegal enterprises but potentially damaging, dangerous, harmful, hurtful attacks on us," says Swails.
The lawsuit seeks nearly half a billion dollars in money laundering penalties from all parties involved including the dealership owners.
We tried to speak to the owner of Ace Auto Leasing on camera and he wouldn't return my calls.
As of 5:30 Thursday night, Ace Auto Leasing had not yet received a restraining order from the FBI.
