Betty's Sugar Cookies (TulsaKids)

I've made these cookies with my kids since they were toddlers. Making sugar cookies from scratch takes more time than buying cookie dough, but it's worth it. Decorating them is a family project every year. It's fun to see how the decorating has developed over the years, and we always get a lot of laughs out of who can make the worst or most bizarre cookie (my family has a weird sense of humor). It wouldn't be Christmas in my family unless we made these cookies together.

Sugar Cookies:

2 sticks butter (or margarine)

2 eggs

2 cups sugar

4 tsp. baking powder

4 tsp. vanilla

1/2 cup milk

4 cups flour

• Beat the butter and sugar together in a large mixing bowl. Add the eggs one at a time, beating after each. Add milk. Mix baking powder and flour and add to butter and sugar mixture. Divide into two balls and refrigerate for a few hours to chill. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Roll to 1/4" and cut with cookie cutters. Place on cookie sheets (I put parchment paper on my cookie sheets). Bake for 8 minutes. Cool and decorate with frosting (recipe follows).

Icing:

1 cup confectioners sugar

1/4 tsp. salt

1/2 tsp. vanilla

1 Tbl. water

• Mix together. May need to be thinned with water or thickened with confectioners sugar. Divide into bowls and add food coloring. Frost. Use other decorations such as colored sugars.
