Damaris Johnson Not Returning For Senior Season

Posted: Updated:

University of Tulsa receiver Damaris Johnson plans to pursue a professional career and will not return for another season, head coach Bill Blankenship announced Monday.

Johnson, who missed the entire 2011 football season after being suspended for pleading guilty to embezzlement, could have returned to the Golden Hurricane next season.

But, Blankenship says he has chosen to leave school and could be taken in the spring NFL Draft.

"It's unfortunate that Damaris has decided not to complete his education and return to the football team at the University of Tulsa," Blankenship said. "We hope nothing but the best for Damaris and his future. He sure has the ability to reach the next level."

In three seasons, Johnson became the NCAA's all-time record holder for all-purpose yards and career kickoff return yardage, leading the country in all-purpose yards in both 2009 and 2010.

He completed his career with 3,417 kickoff return yards, 2,746 receiving yards and 1,062 rushing yards.

Johnson was charged with embezzlement after being accused of purchasing more than 28-hundred dollars worth of merchandise with the debit card of his girlfriend, but only being charged $13.25.

He pleaded guilty to embezzlement and was given a one-year deferred sentence on October 12th. He was also ordered to pay a $500 fine, a $250 victim's compensation fee, court costs and 80 work hours.

Susan Witt with the Tulsa County District Attorney's Office told Tulsa's Channel 8 at the time Johnson's record will be expunged if he completes all that is requested of him within a year.
