Bitson Leaves McLain For TU Coaching Gig

Posted: Updated:

Former all-American football star Dan Bitson is returning to the University of Tulsa.

Bitson was named by TU head coach Bill Blankenship as running backs coach, replacing Holman Wiggins, who resigned last month to take the same position at Memphis.

Bitson, who has spent the past three seasons as head coach at McLain High School, rejoins the coaching staff at TU, where he previously coached receivers in 2001 and 2002.

He was a star receiver on the field for Tulsa in the late 80s and early 90s, making second-team All-American in both 1988 and 1989. He suffer near fatal injuries in a car accident prior to the 1989 Independence Bowl, but would return to play for the Golden Hurricane in 1991.

Despite the passing prowess of TU teams over the past decade, Bitson remains Tulsa's second-leading all-time receiver with 3,330 yards and third with 29 touchdown receptions and his single-season receiving touchdown record of 16 set in 1989 still stands.

"We're excited to have Dan join our football family," Blankenship said. "I've been really impressed with the job that Dan has done at McLain High School. He brings a lot of credibility as an All-American at The University of Tulsa, a guy that's a Tulsan and who made his mark at TU. I think Dan will do a great job for us in recruiting. He's a very well-respected coach and he'll be an excellent fit to our staff."

Bitson was 11-and-18 in three seasons at McLain, including a 6-and-4 mark and the team's first playoff appearance in three seasons in 2011.

He also held coaching positions at Auburn from 2006 to 2008, at Kentucky in 2005 and at Lincoln (Mo.) University from 2002 to 2004.
