Rogers County, OK -

A teenaged driver narrowly escaped after his car was struck by a train in Northeastern Rogers County, late Saturday night.

The incident happened at a rail crossing just after 9:30PM near the intersection of State Highway 66 and Bushyhead Road, about 12 miles Northeast of Claremore.

Trooper Matt Logsdon with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol tells KTUL.com, the driver ran out of gas and stalled out on the railroad crossing. He says the driver spent about 2-3 minutes trying to push the car off the tracks. The driver told Logsdon that it appeared a "tire was down in the grove" of the tracks. Logsdon said the driver kept trying to push the car off up until "twenty seconds before the train hit." The driver then ran off, to avoid getting hit himself.

Trooper Logsdon says both the driver and the train's engineer were both "shaken up."Logsdon goes onto say that the driver was "very lucky."

The car was totaled and pushed about a quarter mile down the tracks. Logsdon says the windshield on the locomotive was cracked by gravel, flying up from the tracks.

Crews with the Burlington Northern SantaFe Railroad had the tracks shut down for a period of time while they inspected the tracks and the rest of the train for damage. Those tracks have since been re-opened.

At this point, no charges are expected to be filed. Look for more on this story later on-air on Tulsa's Channel 8 and on-line at KTUL.com.
