A Mayes County man has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with a crash that killed another man earlier this month.

Court records show prosecutors charged 42-year-old Stewart Gregory Whisman of Pryor with second-degree murder and transporting an open container of liquor Monday morning.

The crash happened January 17th near Jay in Delaware County. Investigators say Whisman was traveling along Highway 20 about a mile west of Jay when he left the roadway to the right, came back onto the highway and slammed head-on into a van driven by 64-year-old Donald Young of Eucha.

Young was pinned in the vehicle for about ten minutes before being rushed to a Grove hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Whisman, who was ejected from his vehicle, was taken to a Tulsa hospital in critical condition.
