Lost Dog Treks 1,200 Miles Home

Merriam, KS -

After an epic 1,200 mile adventure, a lost dog headed back home Wednesday.

And all it took was a strange chain reaction of events and a microchip.

Grizz, a lab-pit bull mix, got loose in his Butte, Montana neighborhood and that's when a couple that was moving to Texas picked him up, thinking he was a stray.

The couple got to Merriam, Kansas when they realized they couldn't really care for him -- and dropped the one-year-old off at the Heartland SPCA.

The animal shelter scanned Grizz for a microchip during intake and found one, connecting him back to his Montana home.

A shelter volunteer agreed to drive the pup halfway home to Cheyenne, Wyoming to reunite with his family.

Shelter officials say its a good reminder why microchipping pets is so important.
