Fallout Far and Wide, AA Job Layoffs

Posted: Updated:

The ripple affect is now the focus for many, as the news of losing more than 2,000 American Airline jobs settles in. If these jobs are lost in Tulsa, it will hurt businesses, real estate and school districts.

The fallout will be far and wide.

"We depend on American Airlines workers and other companies too," says Milad Al-khouri, owner of Christy's BBQ, which is about two miles south of the AA facility.

For 16 years American Airline workers have been stopping in Christy's BBQ. Al-khouri says the AA employees are 25% of his business.

"If they get laid off they are going to put our business in jeopardy," says Al-khouri.

Christy's customer Bill Davis says he won't be immediately affected but it will change his business. He's a pastor at a nearby church and says the layoffs will cause a decrease in offerings and morale.

"We can help lift some of the people up," says Davis.

The trickle down affect will hit many communities.

"It's going to impact business as well, retail business, school attendance or real estate sales," says Owasso Chamber of Commerce President, Gary Akin.

He says roughly 14% of American Airlines employees live in Owasso. So out of the 2,000 proposed layoffs, about 250-300 of those live in Owasso.

Akin says he and other city and county leaders are putting their heads together.

"We literally are all in this together and we are working for a good outcome," says Akin.

Pastor Davis says, good! This problem should be put in the hands of our leaders.

"To save the community of Tulsa, to save Oklahoma and to do everything we can to save jobs," says Davis.

Restaurant owner Al-khouri says he will standby and support his customers until the end.

"Keep their jobs and not to get laid off and we like the company to keep the company in Tulsa," says Al-khouri.

Akin tells me that there may be hope. The One Voice Regional Coalition which is made up of Chambers of Commerce, mayors and other local leaders will help the situation as much as possible. They will try to get some sort of programs to help those that have lost their jobs.
