Can you imagine if every single person in your town won a huge lottery jackpot -- except you?
Sounds like the lead-in to a joke, but it's the harsh reality for one man in Sodeto, Spain.
The New York Times reports that Costis Mitsotakis' entire town won a $950 million jackpot, without him.
Mitsotakis told the Times Tuesday that he was overlooked when the Sodeto homemakers' association went around and colleted $26 from each family in town and nearby villages to put toward the El Gordo.
Called the 'fat one,' the Christmas lottery has been held since 1812.
According to the NYT, Sodeto is a town made up of farmers and unemployed construction workers who are struggling in the current economic.
Thanks to the lucky win, each lottery player walked away with at least $130,000 -- with some families netting millions.
But according to the
Times, Mitsotakis didn't walk away empty-handed. The filmmaker finally found a buyer for a piece of area land he
was selling -- a neighbor with cash in hand.
