TU Beats Houston; Mayberry Reaches 1,000 Points

Posted: Updated:

Taleya Mayberry raced down the court after grabbing a defensive rebound, and she banked home a fast-break layup at the 8:28 mark of the second half.

The basket gave her 1,001 points for her career, and she became just the eighth member of the Tulsa women's basketball team to reach the career milestone as TU defeated Houston 67-53 Sunday afternoon inside Donald W. Reynolds Center.

"I couldn't ask for anything more to be able to get to 1,000 points in a win," Mayberry said. "I was trying to not let it get to me, but it was in the back of my head the first half. Coach Mossman told me at halftime to just keep shooting because I was getting good looks. I'm happy I was able to get the milestone today."

The junior guard finished the game with 12 points, all coming in the second half, and she increased her career total to 1,008 points. Ironically, the attendance for the game was also 1,008, which was the second-largest crowd this season as TU celebrated the annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day.

"I'm so excited for Taleya," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said. "She's certainly put in her time here at Tulsa. I think it was starting to stress her out that she hadn't exceeded (the 1,000-point mark) yet, so this should be a big load off her shoulders."

Sophomore guard Taylor Hooker led all scorers with a career-high 26 points on 9-of-19 shooting. She also recorded seven rebounds and four steals.

Junior forward Tiffani Couisnard tallied 12 rebounds, four points and four steals, and senior forward Chanice Scott added 11 points. Freshman forward Mariah Turner had eight rebounds off the bench.

The Golden Hurricane will take a week off before traveling to Rice for a 2 p.m. meeting on Feb. 12.
