Inhofe Praises FAA Bill's Passage

Washington, DC -

Oklahoma Senator Jim Inhofe says the passage of the Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization and Reform Act of 2011 includes important measures that should help aerospace in Oklahoma.

The vote in the Senate was 75-20 in favor of the measure. It passed 248-169 in the House last week. It now moves to President Obama's desk.

Included in the bill is a measure to integrate unmanned aircraft systems into the national aerospace system by September 30, 2015 and an amendment by Inhofe would make model aircraft weighing less than 55 pounds exempt from the program.

Inhofe says opening air space for unmanned aircraft systems will enhance public safety, allowing law enforcement, fire and emergency responders to use the vehicles.

Oklahoma's congressional delegation recently urged federal agencies to select Oklahoma as a national UAS Test Range.

"Oklahoma's aerospace industry is an important aspect to our economy and our state is an industry leader in UAS research and development," Inhofe said. "Congress directing our nation's air space to be opened to UAS is excellent news."

Last summer, Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin led a delegation of Oklahomans to the 2011 Unmanned Systems North America Conference in Washington, DC to promote western Oklahoma for a UAS testing ground.

Oklahoma has 200 square miles of testing airspace from the surface to 40,000 feet and has a formal agreement with the FAA and US Air Force to research and facilitate the future use of UAS as part of the FAA's testing electronic navigational systems worldwide.
