A pair of relief pitchers combined for four and a third innings of shutout baseball as Oklahoma defeated Pepperdine 4-3 in the season opener in Malibu, California.
The Sooners (1-0) trailed 2-0 until back-to-back two-out RBI singles from Hunter Lockwood and Matt Oberste knotted the score. OU added an RBI ground out from Max White in the fifth for a 3-2 lead.
Pepperdine evened the score in the fifth when Matt Forgatch walked, advanced to second on a failed pickoff and scored on Aaron Brown's single.
Oberste scored the eventual game-winner in the sixth when he lined a two-out double to left and scored on a single by Garrett Carey.
Pepperdine had the leadoff batter on base in the seventh only to have Jordan John get Joe Sever ground into a double play to end the threat. Forgatch also singled to lead off the eighth, but John got out of the jam again.
In the ninth, the Waves again threatened, putting runners on first and second with one out against Damien Magnifico, but Sever again grounded into a double play to end the game.
Oklahoma had 12 hits in the game, including at least one from each starter. Lockwood, Oberste and Carey each had two hits. John picked up the win, allowing no runs on two hits in three and a third innings. Magnifico earned the save with a scoreless ninth.
The Sooners and Waves continue their weekend series Saturday at 3 p.m.
