Oklahoma City -
Chesapeake Energy Corp. said it plans to more than double its oil and liquids production by 2015 as the natural gas giant aims to become one of the U.S.'s top five oil producers.
According to the Dow Jones Newswire, the Oklahoma City-based company said it plans to produce about 250,000 barrels a day of oil and natural gas liquids in the next three years -- that's an increase from 104,000 barrels in the fourth last quarter.
Chesapeake said it would finance its expansion into relatively new oil fields by selling some or all of its 1.5 million acres in the Permian Basin in west Texas and New Mexico.
The widespread use of of fracking, which is a process used to get natural gas out of the ground, by Chesapeake and other oil producers has driven natural gas prices down.
The announcement comes after the company reported that its first-quarter profit rose to $429 million Tuesday from $180 million a year ago. That's up to 63 cents a share from 28 cents a share last year.
