Cowboys Baseball Sweeps Bowling Green

Posted: Updated:

Oklahoma State won its fifth game in a row and completed a three-game series sweep of Bowling Green State with a 6-2 victory Sunday afternoon at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.

The Cowboys used a five-run rally in the sixth inning to propel them to the win as they improved to 5-3, while BGSU remained winless in five games this season.

A pair of newcomers fueled the pivotal OSU rally. With the game tied 1-1 after 5 ½ innings, back-to-back singles by Jared Womack and Zach Fish and a walk to Gabe Weidenaar loaded the bases with one out. Freshman Wes Jones then stepped to the plate and delivered a bases clearing double into the gap in left-center field to put the Cowboys up 4-1.

Jones' hit ended the day for BGSU starter Ethan McKenney, but reliever Nick Bruns came out of the bullpen and promptly surrendered a two-run home run to Victor Romero. The blast was the first homer of Romero's OSU career and gave the Cowboys a five-run advantage.

OSU's offensive outburst helped give starter Randy McCurry his first win of the season. The junior right-hander gave up 10 hits but allowed just two runs and struck out four to improve to 1-1 on the year.

As they did in the first two games of the series, the Cowboys overcame a deficit to win.

The Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on and RBI single by Andrew Kubuski, but in the bottom of the inning, Weidenaar connected on his second home run of the series, a solo shot that tied the score. The round tripper was OSU's first hit of the game.

OSU returns to action Wednesday looking to extend its winning streak to six when the Cowboys host Missouri State at 4 p.m.
