Deputy Injured During Pursuit In Adair County

Stilwell -

A Cherokee County sheriff's deputy was injured after crashing while pursuing a suspect vehicle early Sunday morning near Stilwell.

It happened at about 3:20 a.m. about five miles west of Stilwell in Adair County. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reports Deputy Bronson McNiel was southbound on a country road in pursuit of a suspect vehicle when he failed to negotiate a curve.

McNiel's Crown Victoria left the roadway and overturned one quarter time, coming to rest on the passenger side door. He was taken to a Tahlequah hospital in stable condition.

McNiel is the same deputy that was involved in a fatal shooting last month. It happened February second in Hulbert.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation says McNiel was responding to a noise complaint when he says Richard Charles Ogg fired a shot at him.

McNiel returned fire, striking Ogg, who was later pronounced dead at the scene.

The Cherokee County district attorney's office ruled deadly force was justified.
