Tulsa Ousted By Marshall In Triple Overtime

Posted: Updated:

The season has come to an end for the Tulsa Golden Hurricane as Marshall rallied four times to beat TU 105-100 in triple overtime in the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Tournament Thursday in Memphis, Tennessee.

Tulsa led 64-58 with 2:24 to play, but Marshall scored six straight points, including a jumper by Shaquille Johnson with one minute left that forced overtime.

In the overtime period, TU led 74-71 with one minute to play before Johnson drew a foul with 35 seconds left and knocked down a pair of free throws, sending the game to a second extra period.

In the second overtime, Tulsa again led, this time 83-79 with less than a minute to play, but the Herd again rallied to tie when DeAndre Kane drove the length of the floor and hit a layup with ten seconds on the clock.

After Tulsa took a 91-88 lead on Scottie Haralson's 3-pointer early in the third overtime, the Thundering Herd used a 9-2 spurt to take control. The Golden Hurricane couldn't get the shots to fall over the final few minutes, missing a lay-up and two free throws in the final two minutes.

The game took nearly three and a half hours to complete and featured 101 free throw attempts --58 by Tulsa. The Golden Hurricane missed on 18 of those attempts.

Four Tulsa players -- Jordan Clarkson, Kodi Maduka, D.J. Magley and Joe Richard -- fouled out of the game and five Marshall players were disqualified as well. When it was all over, only five Marshall players were eligible.

Eric McClellan led Tulsa (17-14) with 25 points. Steven Idlet added 20 and Scottie Haralson, Clarkson and Maduka each added 14.

Marshall (20-12) was led by Kane, who had a career high 40 points. The Thundering Herd will play Friday against Southern Miss, who also survived overtime to beat East Carolina 81-78 earlier in the day.
