Oklahoma City -
An elderly Oklahoma City man was beaten and stabbed to death Tuesday afternoon and now, police have charged a young man for his murder.
Vernon Gowdy, 78, was killed just four days before his birthday.
It started around 1 p.m. Tuesday, when OKC police officers were called to meet a man on SW 39th St. who said he had information on a possible homicide.
Edward Williams, 18, told officers someone was beaten and stabbed in an apartment nearly three miles away, on S. Lee St.
That's where officers found Gowdy, alive, critically injured. He was taken to OU Medical Center and later passed away from his injuries.
Williams was taken to the Homicide Unit, where he was interviewed and jailed at first on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon.
That was amended to a first-degree murder charge Wednesday when investigators found out Gowdy had died.
According to police, it is unclear what led Williams to attack the elderly man.
It is the city's 25th homicide of the year.
