OSU Baseball Sweeps Kansas

Posted: Updated:

Oklahoma State completed a series sweep of Kansas with a 4-2 win over the Jayhawks Sunday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.

The Cowboys led the entire game as they improved to 17-14 overall with their third-straight win. After entering the weekend ninth in the Big 12 Conference standings, OSU is now 4-5 in league play and in fourth place heading into this weekend's series at Texas.

Robbie Rea and Gabe Weidenaar each collected two RBIs Sunday to lead the Cowboys' offense, while Vince Wheeland picked up his first-career Big 12 win with a 6.2 inning effort.

OSU took a lead it never surrendered in its first at bat. Jared Womack continued his hot hitting with a one-out single, and Rea followed with an RBI double down the left field line. Three batters later it was Weidenaar bringing home a run with a single to give the Cowboys a 2-0 lead.

Kansas (12-19, 2-7) trimmed its deficit with a run in the third on an RBI groundout by James Stanfield, and the game remained 2-1 until the sixth.

In that inning, OSU tallied another run when Weidenaar followed a leadoff triple by Trey Whaley with an RBI groundout to put the Cowboys up, 3-1.

KU answered with a rally in the seventh, but the Cowboys were able to pitch out of a jam to keep their lead intact.

In the seventh, Wheeland walked Jordan Dreiling then surrendered a double to Zac Elgie. After a line drive out, the Jayhawks cut OSU's lead to 3-2 on another RBI groundout, this one by Ka'iana Eldredge.

The Cowboys weren't out of trouble yet as Wheeland walked the next two KU hitters to load the bases and bring Blake Barnes out of the bullpen. And the OSU senior got the job done, getting Stanfield to fly out to end the inning.

Barnes also worked the next two innings and struck out two for the first save of his career. He did not allow a run or a hit.

Up next, the Cowboys travel to Austin to face the Longhorns on Friday.
