ORU Splits Double-Header, Series, With Oakland

Posted: Updated:

Cam Schiller saved The Golden Eagles from being swept in the Easter Sunday doubleheader with a grand slam to win game two, 8-6, as Oral Roberts split the four game series with Oakland at J.L. Johnson Stadium.

Oakland (6-23, 2-2 Summit) captured the first series split with the Golden Eagles in school history with a 4-1 win in game one of the doubleheader on Sunday.

ORU (15-16, 2-2 Summit) showed flashes of offensive brilliance in the series, but continued to struggle with consistency as they were held to just one run in the two losses to Oakland.

Schiller led the Golden Eagles in the doubleheader with five RBI on the day. Schiller leads ORU with 31 RBI on the season. Jose Trevino was 2-7 with a home run and two RBI.

GAME 1; Oakland 4, ORU 1

Oakland snatched a victory in game one of the doubleheader, led by Mike Carson at the plate, who hit his second home run of the season. Carson scored two runs and had two hits to lead the Golden Grizzlies.

Alex Gonzalez (3-2) pitched five innings for ORU, allowing four runs on five hits with eight strikeouts in the loss.

The Golden Eagles left 10 on base and committed three errors in the game.

For the third time in the series, ORU fell behind early when the Carson home run gave Oakland a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Oakland added one if the third inning and two in the fourth off three hits and a failed pickoff attempt by Gonzalez to extend the lead, 4-0.

Schiller gave ORU life with an RBI-single in the seventh, cutting Oakland's lead to 4-1. But several tremendous defensive plays and good pitching by Oakland kept ORU off the board for the rest of the game.

Russell Luxton pitched four innings of relief, allowing two hits and one run to earn his first save of the season.

GAME 2; ORU 8, Oakland 6 (7 innings)

Drew Bowen started game two for ORU, but would leave in the second inning with an injury that has already caused him to miss time. Bowen pitched two innings, allowing two runs off three hits with three strikeouts.

The big bats in the ORU lineup would backup their injured ace by leaving the park three times in the game.

Back-to-back home runs by Jose Trevino and Jared Schlehuber put the Golden Eagles out front 3-0 in the first inning.

John Estes answered for Oakland in the second with a two-run home run to cut ORU's lead to 3-2, then Oakland grabbed the lead in the fourth when Tim Ryan hit a two-run single into left field to make it 4-3.

Nate Goro responded by tying the game in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI-double to score Healey.

Oakland pulled in front for a final time in the fifth inning with an RBI single by Nolan Jacoby, 5-4, but Schiller's grand slam gave ORU the lead for good.

Dan Martony improved to 3-0 on the season with 1.1 innings of relief in the fifth inning.

Alec Smith pitched the sixth and seventh innings, earning his first save of the year as ORU prevailed 8-6.

The Golden Eagles take on Southern Utah for a four game series in Cedar City beginning Thursday, April 12 at 3 p.m.
