Schmidt Rebounds In OneOK Field Debut

Posted: Updated:

Drillers starting pitcher Nick Schmidt surrendered 1 run over 6 complete innings in his first appearance at OneOK field as Tulsa beats the Corpus Christi Hooks 2-1 in their series opener.

Schmidt, a former All-American at Arkansas and first round pick by San Diego in 2007, has struggled to reach his potential since blowing out his elbow 7 innings into his professional career.

Tulsa opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when catcher Chris Wallace made a throwing error to third base on a Josh Rutledge steal attempt. The throw went by the third baseman, allowing Rutledge to make it home safely.

Corpus Christi answered in the fourth inning on a Jake Goebbert leadoff home run. Goebbert pulled a 2-1 pitch into the Hooks' bullpen, tying the game at 1.

The Drillers broke the deadlock in the bottom of the eighth inning with a Nolan Arenado 1-out solo home run; the only scoring of that inning. Arenado, rated as the Rockies' top minor-league prospect, finished the day 2-3 and is batting .395 this season.

The Hooks and Drillers will play the second of three games tomorrow at 12:35.
