ORU Sweeps Double-Header vs. Western Illinois

Posted: Updated:

Kurt Giller and Alex Gonzalez threw back-to-back complete game shutouts, and Oral Roberts defeated Western Illinois 10-0 and 2-0 in the Saturday doubleheader at J.L. Johnson Stadium.

ORU (20-18, 7-3 Summit) won both games in seven innings thanks to the Summit League run-rule in game one.  Jared Schlehuber led ORU with two home runs and five RBI, both coming in the first game, including a two-run walk-off in the bottom of the seventh. Schlehuber leads the team with 11 home runs on the season.

Jose Trevino also hit his eighth and ninth home run of the season, and has hit a home run in all three games against Western Illinois. Trevino leads the team with a .317 average and 35 RBI.

WIU (12-23-1, 3-8 Summit) managed just three hits combined in both games. Rich Mascheri (1-7) and Tom Constand combined for 11 walks in 6.2 innings in game one. Dan Russell (3-3) got the loss in game two after pitching six innings, allowing two runs off four hits.

Game 1: ORU 10, WIU 0 (7-innings. Run Rule)

Kurt Giller threw a complete game shutout, allowing just two hits with five strikeouts.

The Golden Eagles scored one run in the first with an RBI double by Jose Trevino, and four more in the second to make it 5-0 after a three run home run by Schlehuber and an RBI-double by Cam Schiller.

A sacrifice bunt by Kevin Cho in the fifth inning pushed the lead to 6-0, and an RBI-single by Schiller in the sixth made it 7-0. Tom Constand walked Bennett Pickar with the bases loaded in the sixth to give ORU an 8-0 lead, then Schlehuber capped the win with a two-run walk-off in the seventh.

Game 2: ORU 2, WIU 0 (7-innings)

ORU found it more difficult to scrape together runs in game two, but all they would need was one as Alex Gonzalez (4-2) was brilliant on the mound once again, throwing a complete game one-hitter with five strikeouts. The defending Summit League Pitcher of the Year lowered his ERA to 1.85 on the season.

A solo home run by Trevino in the second and a groundout by Cho that scored Jake O'Brien in the third were the only runs scored in the game.

The series will conclude on Sunday at J.L. Johnson Stadium at 1 p.m. as ORU looks for the four game sweep.
