"Kamp Kloppenburg" Begins

Posted: Updated:

On a misty Sunday morning inside the Reynolds Center practice gymnasium at the University of Tulsa, the Shock began their first preseason camp under the direction of new head coach Gary Kloppenburg.

For more than three hours, coach "Klopp" worked in-depth with the players, focusing on defense and rebounding primarily.

According to rookie and first round draft pick Glory Johnson, the philosophy is similar to what she did at Tennessee under legendary coach Pat Summitt.

But the approach is a little different.

"[Kloppenburg] is a lot different from Pat where he's not a yeller," said Johnson. "He talked about defense and rebounding then pushing to offense. So that's a lot like at the University of Tennessee."

Kloppenburg's approach appeared to be just the spark this young group of players need after winning a league-low three games last season.

And according to the new head coach, there is a significant learning curve when making the transition from college to the WNBA.

"The pro game is so much different from the college game," explained Kloppenburg. "So many nuances you have to learn, so many new things the rookies have to learn, so that's where you have to be careful."

The Shock will play their first preseason game at Atlanta this Saturday, May 5th, at 1:00 p.m.
