OSU Baseball Sweeps Kansas State

Posted: Updated:

For the first time in four years, Oklahoma State has swept back-to-back conference series after the Cowboys knocked off Kansas State, 9-5, Sunday at Tointon Stadium.

With the win, OSU's win streak reached eight as the Cowboys improved to 26-17 overall and are now tied with Texas A&M for third place in the Big 12 standings at 11-7.

With three-straight wins over Texas Tech last weekend and Kansas State this week, OSU completed consecutive Big 12 series sweeps for the first time since the 2008 Cowboys achieved the feat against Texas and Kansas.

In Sunday's finale, OSU collected 16 hits, its most in a conference game this season and one shy of its single-game high. Saulyer Saxon and Trey Whaley each had three hits to lead the Cowboys' offense, with Saxon's effort marking a career best.

Kyle Ottoson picked up his second win of the week with four innings of relief work against the Wildcats as the senior southpaw allowed just three hits and improved to 4-5. Blake Barnes worked the final 2.1 innings to earn his third save.

Both teams scored runs in the first inning, with an RBI groundout by Jared Womack giving OSU a brief lead before K-State tied it in the bottom of the frame on an RBI double by Wade Hinkle.

The Cowboys added a run in the fourth when Whaley doubled to bring home Mark Ginther, and an RBI by Robbie Rea made it 3-1 in the fifth.

K-State (19-26, 3-15) trimmed its deficit with a run in the bottom of the fifth, but as they would throughout the contest, the Cowboys' offense answered. This time it was Randy McCurry blasting his first home run of the season, a solo shot over the left field wall in the sixth inning, that put OSU up, 4-2.

Things got interesting in the seventh. OSU expanded its lead to 6-2 in the top of the inning on RBI singles by Womack and Whaley, but Ottoson got into trouble in the bottom of the frame.

Trailing by four, the Wildcats rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh despite managing just one hit. K-State scored its first run on a throwing error by Bailey and added a run on an RBI single by Tanner Witt before a passed ball by Womack made the score 6-5.

However, OSU would get the three runs back in its next at bat, the big blow coming on a two-out, two-RBI single by Mark Ginther that pushed OSU's lead back to four.

OSU returns to action Friday in the Bedlam Series opener against Oklahoma in Tulsa. Following Friday's contest, the series shifts to Oklahoma City for the final two games.
