Walk-Off Homer Lifts Drillers To Best Start In Team History

Posted: Updated:

The Tulsa Drillers are off to the team's best start ever, notching their 18th win in the month of April with Mike Zuanich's 3-run walk-off homer Monday that gave Tulsa a four-game sweep of the Springfield Cardinals.

The Drillers had been blanked all afternoon and trailed 2-0 heading to the bottom of the ninth. That's when Kiel Roling was issued a one-out walk and Kent Matthes was hit by a pitch.

Zuanich -- who entered the game batting just 172 with no home runs and no runs batted in -- took a 3-1 pitch to deep center field to end it.

The Drillers are now 18-and-6 and own a commanding six-game lead over Northwest Arkansas in the Texas League North Division.

The 18 victories in April top the previous best of 16 which was set in 1989, when future major league MVPs Sammy Sosa and Juan Gonzalez were on the team.

Tulsa has won nine of its last ten games and five straight. They will begin May by hitting the road for an eight-game trip to Arkansas. The Drillers will play at Arkansas through Friday, then will play at Northwest Arkansas Saturday through Tuesday.

Tulsa's next home game will be May 10th against Arkansas.
