Former OU Receiver Can't Play For Jayhawks In 2012

Lawrence, KS -

Former University of Oklahoma receiver Justin McCay won't be able to play this fall after transferring to Kansas as the NCAA has denied his request for a hardship waiver.

The NCAA Subcommittee for Legislative Relief sent down the ruling on McCay's final appeal Wednesday night. The move means McCay, who appeared in three games for the Sooners last year, will have to sit out the entire 2012 season.

He'll be eligible for KU as a junior in 2013.

As you can imagine, new Jayhawks head coach Charlie Weiss was not pleased with the ruling.

"I'm extremely disappointed that common sense did not prevail," Weiss said. "I have read all of the information on this case and it is a shame that this case resulted in a rejection. I cannot release all of the details of Justin's case as it would be an invasion of his privacy. I can only say that the University of Kansas felt the evidence was overwhelmingly in his favor. I also do not understand why the NCAA had us appeal this case to the subcommittee only to have received the same answer with the same rationale."

"This is a very disappointing day for me and my family," added McCay. "I was very hopeful throughout the process that I would receive a more favorable result, but unfortunately that is not how things turned out."

McCay was a five-star recruit out of Bishop Meige High School in Shawnee Mission, Kansas. He redshirted in 2010 and appeared in three games as a redshirt sophomore last year without making a catch.
