Drillers' Skid Reaches Six Games

Posted: Updated:

Tulsa Drillers lefthander Nick Schmidt made only one mistake during his outing in Springfield Saturday night, and it cost him the game. Schmidt was brilliant except for allowing a solo home run to Kolten Wong in the bottom of the third inning. The homer accounted for the only run of the game as the Cardinals defeated Tulsa 1-0, extending the Drillers losing streak to six straight games.

The Drillers offensive struggles continued as they were limited to only six hits in the game by a group of four different Springfield pitchers. Second baseman Angelys Nina was the only Tulsa player to get more than one hit, finishing 2-4.

Schmidt worked seven innings, allowing the one run and seven hits while walking only one batter striking out seven. The defeat dropped his record to 2-2.

During their six-game losing streak, the Drillers have scored a total of only 13 runs with 6 of those coming in the first defeat of the streak.

Tulsa missed a chance in Saturday's loss to either tie the game or take the lead in the top of the ninth. Consecutive singles by Nolen Arenado and Kiel Roling opened the inning, but a sacrifice bunt attempt from Kent Matthes forced Arenado at third. Tim Torres then flied out and Nina grounded out to end the game.

The game marked the 11th time in the month of May that the Drillers have been held to three or fewer runs, including the last five.

One offensive bright spot was Arenado's ninth-inning hit that allowed him to extend his hitting streak to nine straight games.

The Drillers will look to snap their skid Sunday afternoon against the Cardinals. Joe Gardner (1-2, 6.19 ERA) will pitch for Tulsa against Trevor Rosenthal (3-4, 3.29 ERA) of Springfield. First pitch is slated for 2:08PM at Hammons Field.
