Drillers Retake First In North Division

Posted: Updated:

The Tulsa Drillers snap a six-game losing skid Sunday afternoon with a 3-2 win over the Springfield Cardinals.

Heading into the eighth inning of the Drillers game against the Springfield Cardinals on Sunday afternoon, Tulsa had gone their past 22 straight innings without scoring a single run. That streak was broken thanks to another Drillers streak being kept alive.

After back to back singles by Tim Torres and Josh Rutledge, Mike Mitchell was unable to get a bunt down to move the runners over.  That brought third baseman Nolan Arenado to the plate with men on first and second with 1 out.

Arenado lined a double down the left field line to score Torres and snap the scoreless inning streak.  With the RBI double, Arenado extended his personal hitting streak to 10 straight games.

Arenado was not satisfied with just ending the scoreless inning streak.  He made the play of the game that ultimately halted the Drillers 6 game losing streak as well.  With two outs in the inning, Cards' reliever Kevin Thomas threw a wild pitch that caromed to the backstop.

Rutledge easily scored from third to tie the game at two.  Arenado, who never stopped running on the play, came heading for home in hopes of putting the Drillers on top.  He slid into the plate just in time to complete the rare two-run scoring wild pitch.

Springfield scored both of their runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.  After a leadoff walk to Greg Garcia, Nick Derba hit a one-out double to plate the Cardinals shortstop.

Two batters later, Kolten Wong singled to bring in Derba and complete the Springfield scoring for the afternoon.

Tulsa starter Joe Gardner went 6 strong innings allowing the 2 runs on 5 hits while walking 2 and striking out 5.  He was replaced by Zach Simons who pitched a perfect 1-2-3 seventh inning to earn his first win of the season.

Coty Woods and Josh Sullivan both came in for an inning and pitched well, as they have all season. Woods continued his scoreless innings streak which is now at 19 innings.  Sullivan locked down his team-leading 8th save of the season.

Springfield starter Trevor Rosenthal went 7 innings without allowing a run but did not factor in the decision.  Reliever Jesse Simpson took the loss for the Cards.

Thanks to a NW Arkansas loss on Sunday afternoon, Tulsa regained sole possession of first place in the Texas League North Division.  The Drillers will try to add to their lead on Monday afternoon in the series finale at Hammons Field in Springfield.  Tulsa will send Edwar Cabrera (4-3, 3.20 ERA) to the hill with a first pitch scheduled for 12:08PM.
