Oklahoma State junior Andrew Heaney has been named the 2012 Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Year as selected by the league's head coaches, it was announced today.
Heaney, a southpaw from Oklahoma City, becomes the first OSU pitcher to earn Big 12 Pitcher of the Year honors. He was also named to the All-Big 12 First Team.
Joining Heaney in collecting All-Big 12 accolades for OSU are Robbie Rea and Randy McCurry, who both made the All-Big 12 Second Team, and Wes Jones, who was named to the All-Freshman Team. Additionally, five Cowboys were named honorable mention All-Big 12: Hunter Bailey, Blake Barnes, Mark Ginther, Chase Stevens and Trey Whaley.
Heaney has started 14 games for OSU this season and is 8-1 with five complete games, three shutouts and a 1.63 ERA. Named to the Golden Spikes Award Watch List, Heaney is also a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy and a finalist for the College Baseball Hall of Fame National Pitcher of the Year.
Heaney ranks second in the NCAA with 132 strikeouts in 110.1 innings and has recorded eight or more strikeouts in 11 of his 14 appearances. He is the first OSU pitcher to reach 100 strikeouts in a season since Matt Smith racked up 114 in 2000, and his 132 punchouts are the fifth most in a single season in OSU history.
With back-to-back shutouts vs. Alabama A&M (March 9) and Houston (March 16), Heaney became the first OSU pitcher to record consecutive shutouts since Smith in 1998. He is also the first Cowboy since Tyler Lyons in 2008 to post two-straight complete games.
Heaney turned in his third consecutive complete game in a 3-2 win over Missouri. In those three games, the lefty was 3-0 with 0.67 ERA and 34 strikeouts and did not issue a walk.
Heaney added his fourth complete game and third shutout on May 4 against Oklahoma. In that game, he struck out seven and allowed just one walk and three hits. Only two Sooners advanced past first base, and he retired 13-straight batters to end the game.
Heaney's three shutouts are one shy of the Big 12 single-season record and are fifth on OSU's career list, two shy of John Farrell.
Among Big 12 pitchers in 2012, Heaney ranks first in innings pitched, strikeouts, shutouts and complete games and is second in ERA and opponent batting average.
Rea, who is in his first season with the Cowboys, earned a spot on the All-Big 12 Second Team as an infielder. The OSU second baseman leads the Pokes in hitting with a .322 batting average and is among the Big 12 leaders in hits (69), doubles (18) and total bases (102).
McCurry, also a junior, was named to the All-Big Second Team as a utility player. Since joining the lineup as the Cowboys' designated hitter, he is hitting .306 with a home run and eight RBIs. On the mound, he has made 14 appearances, including 11 starts, and is 4-2 with a 2.94 ERA.
