Area lakes are already packed for the Memorial Day weekend. Whether it's to swim, to boat, or to fish, it takes planning ahead before hitting the lake. So the Grand River Dam Authority is helping people get prepared for the lake.
Using technology to stay in communication with lake goers is nothing new for the GRDA. But what is new is turning to text messages. This is the first time, the GRDA is sending text alerts about the lake to your smart phone.
"If we can get the information to them right where they are. We think it will make for a safer more enjoyable weekend," says Justin Alberty, Communications Director GRDA.
The people that head to the lake each weekend are glad this is an option.
"I think it's a very good idea. It's very informative for everybody that wants to know what is going on around the lake and sounds like it would be a safe deal too," says Miami resident, Mike Allen.
For many of the people that have been out at the lake for days and may not know if something at the lake changes. You sign up for the alerts and you will know instantly what's happening.
"There is so much going on at the lake during the summer and people are coming from all over the region. From Oklahoma City, from Wichita, from Dallas, coming to Grand Lake or Lake Hudson and if we can be getting this information out to them earlier before they get here it can help them plan their trip," says Alberty.
For the people who come to fish this alert will also let you know the temperature of the water.
"Let's you know if the fish are biting or not," says Destry Allen.
But overall the alerts will allow you to plan and not have to spend extra time looking through things you don't need.
"That way you are not thumbing through and looking at all different kinds of information that's out there you have one deal that's just for that," says Mike Allen.
GRDA will still send out their email updates. This will just add to the list of alerts you can get.
