The Tulsa Police Department has been selected from a nationwide search to participate and present on the Department's Hispanic Outreach Program.
The Vera Institute of Justice, funded by a Department of Justice (DOJ) grant, selected Tulsa, out of 350 police departments nationwide, as 1 of 10 departments to present on promising police-immigrant relations practices.
Sergeant Mark Sherwood and Officer Jesse Guardiola were in New York City Wednesday to share their ideas in a national report that will be studied and promoted as a national model.
The Department is proud of this national recognition because the Department's Outreach has only been in existence for two years.
Guardiola and Sherwood created the six-component program to help combat the large under-reporting of crime in the Hispanic Community. They also educated local law enforcement on the Immigrant Culture and Survival Street Spanish.
