Tulsa Tough Draws Cyclists and Families

Posted: Updated:

Tulsa Tough is getting underway tonight. That is three days of bike racing, novice, amateurs and professionals.

Out of 2500 races---this one ranks in the top four in the nation!  Channel 8's Kim Jackson explains everything you need to know--to be a part of this cycling festival.

Believe it or not, there are  guard rails lining downtown streets to protect you! This is like the Nascar of bike racing. And now, it's easier to watch, thanks to your cell phone.

Tulsa Tough is making a turn this year more to social media. Now there is an app--to help you navigate daily schedules. race times. and race routes.

"We are the first event of our kind in country to have this kind of app. These apps were developed for Tour de France and  big international stage races," said Malcolm McCollam, of Tulsa Tough.

Lots of cyclists have Facebook and Twitter--so that app is right down their paths.

In fact Jesus Chaparro and Krissy Nelson met on Twitter, met face to face at Tough 2010 and at the 2011 races, he popped the question right before his race!

And during that race, he was nervous and saw a crash right in front of him!

"The first thing that popped into my head, came out, I'm going down, there is no way I can avoid this crash but the next thing that popped in my head was you can't go down, after what you just did," he recollected.

The love kept him and them going another year.

Tulsa Tough promotes love, health and wellness. There are rides and races, even for your kids: 8-miles of bliss. And for the pros---there is the best of the best in competition.

Ginny King is a racer from Texas and says, "There is huge group of women here and to be a part of that is fun for me."

Krissy and Jesus met here, a third year, with her wearing the ring. He's in Texas, she's in Nebraska. when are they tying the knot?

"I gotta perform everytime I am up here, so I don't think there's any, there's no announcements this time, not on my part. This time I don't have anything up my sleeve," they said in unison.

This time, win or lose, he already has the prize.

The races start Friday at 6:15 and go on until Sunday afternoon.

If you'd like to download the app, go to your app store and find Tour Tracker, look for Tulsa Tough.
