Drillers Sweep Travelers In North Little Rock

Posted: Updated:

A day after clinching the Texas League North Division first-half championship, the Tulsa Drillers did not succumb to the notion that they could lay down for the rest of the first half.  Tulsa completed a four game sweep of the Arkansas Travelers by the score of 6-1 to secure their season-best 8th straight win.

The Travelers opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning off of starter Nick Schmidt.  A Roberto Lopez single brought home Casey Haerther who doubled and stole third base.  The run would be the last tally on the scoreboard for the Travs on the night as Schmidt settled in to throw 5 innings while allowing 6 hits 2 walks and striking out 4.

The Drillers erased the deficit in the top of the third inning thanks to an RBI single by Mike Mitchell.  Warren Schaeffer came in to score on the single after he reached base on his first double of the season.

Tulsa took the lead for good in the very next inning after Ben Paulsen doubled and scored.  Kiel Roling drove in Paulsen with an RBI single to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Drillers.

Roling struck again in the top of the eighth with a bases- clearing double that scored Angelys Nina, Paulsen, and Tim Torres.  All three runners had been walked to reach base.  Schaeffer, who also walked, scored 2 at- bats earlier courtesy of a wild pitch by Daniel Tillman.

The Tulsa bullpen was tremendous once again as three pitchers came in the game and all held the Travs offense scoreless.  Joey Williamson, Zach Simons, and Mike Marbry combined for 4 innings while allowing only 3 Traveler baserunners.

Tulsa's pitching staff allowed only 3 earned runs in the four game sweep of Arkansas and will look to continue its dominance as the Drillers begin a 4 game series with NW Arkansas on Monday.  Joe Gardner (3-3, 4.70 ERA) will take the mound for Tulsa with a first pitch scheduled for 7:00PM at Arvest Ballpark in Springdale, Arkansas.

NOTES: Nolan Arenado and Josh Rutledge both did not play for the first time all season on Sunday.....Arkansas starter John Hellweg picked up the loss after throwing 7 innings, allowing 6 hits, 2 earned runs, and striking out 7.
