Extreme Heat For the First Weekend of Summer

Posted: Updated:

The extreme heat is greeting us for the first weekend of summer and that heat is already changing some of outdoor plans. There are events around town that are already having to think about keeping people hydrated.

It's the first time the Color Run will be in Tulsa and they picked a hot summer weekend. So, before they arrived they went to the drawing board to come up with a plan.

"We have been watching the temperatures. It looks like it's going to stay in a manageable temperature the high 80's but we have upped our water amount. Almost tripled the amount of water we have," says race director, Sean DeGrey.

They also decided an extra 30 minutes would be great.

"The start time really helps a lot to get that extra 30 minutes because that pushes off a third to a half of our runners into the race before our start time was," says DeGrey.

DeGrey is from Utah and can't believe it's already this warm here.

"It is hotter. I think it's hotter to me than most people around here. I see people running. They were just here playing soccer and I don't know how they do it," says DeGrey.

Being a runner isn't the only sport that's out doors. The area golf courses have to deal with the heat all summer and the earlier they open the better for them.

"Most of the people really fight hard over the early tee times everybody is trying to play before ten," says assistant golf professional, David Ellinghausen.

They also tell their golfers water is key.

"Drink tons of water. Stay cool. Take a towel with you keep it wet. You can't drink enough water," says Ellinghausen.

But no matter what sport you are doing outdoors. Getting out and doing something fun is key and that's why there are ten thousand people signed up for the Color Run in the weather.

"It seems to create a lot of energy. People like the color and it's just different," says DeGrey.
