Claremore Fire Department Helps Young Burn Victims

The Claremore Fire Department held its first Hot Rods and Heroes event at the Expo Center Saturday to raise money to send local children to Burn Camp this summer.

There was a car show for hot rods and motorcycles, along with food vendors, live music, a poker run, and more. Fire Marshal Jason Crandall told Channel 8 they expect to raise $5,000 from the event to send at least five kids to burn camp. He said he's seen the camp help kids' self esteem.

10-year-old Alexis Henson attended the event with her grandmother. Henson has been attending camp since she was six. A fryer was accidentally knocked over on her when she was 14 months old. She experienced burns on about a third of her body. She said going to camp helped her realize she was not alone.

"We swim and go to the arcade," said Henson. She has met several good friends at camp.

People can continue to donate to the cause through the Claremore Fire Department. Its phone number is 918-341-1477.
