The Weather Coalition is once again giving out air conditioning units to people that need them. They focus mainly on the elderly and very sick. With the weather in the triple digit temperatures, having air flowing through your home is key. The Weather Coalition serves about 150 families each year in the Tulsa area.
Homeowner, Gail Walker has lived in her home for 20 years and this year her central air just would not come on. These past few days have been very tough, to say the least.
"It's been brutal almost cruel I didn't mind so much for myself but when it came to my pet and my child," Walker said
But facing medical bills and not being able to work because of a pace maker, she had to ask for help.
"It's the difference between life and death and I'm not being dramatic with a heart condition you just can't do the same things you did before," Walker said.
Within minutes the new AC unit was in the window and ready for work. The heat coalition has had a record number of people asking for assistance for year and the rapid amount they are installing now is becoming a concern.
"The heat coalition installed a 150 last year and this heat wave coming sooner it is a big concern," says Associate Director of the Community Service Council, Jim Lyall.
The Weather Coalition thinks that they may not have enough units for the demand. So, they are always looking for donations and Walker understands one summer you might need the help.
"I never dreamed I would find myself in a position where I would need help but things change so fast over the course of a year," Walker said.
Walker was having to leave her windows open and this new unit will ease her mind while sleeping. But the best part is the air in her house is already cooling down.
"I don't have to go and find a place to stay cool. I can stay in my own house. That just means everything," Walker said.
Now the electric bill is on the homeowner but the air conditioning units are all donated. So if you need assistance or have a donation you are asked to call the Weather Coalition at 918-834-2665.
