Tulsa -
With the mercury rising, it's not just us humans who need to be careful.
Vets warn, we need to keep a close eye on our pets too.
Make sure they have fresh water and plenty of shade.
And never leave your dog in the car.
If your dog does get overheated, there are a few ways to cool them off.
But vets say, never use cold water.
Marla Beach with Southern Hills Vet Hospital told ktul.com, "It's really important. If you do notice signs of heat stress in your animal, use luke warm water to wet them down with. You can put alcohol on their foot pads and on their bellies. But absolutely no cold water. What can happen there is you can shut the capillaries of the skin down, and then they can't rid of the heat even worse."
Symptoms of heat stroke in dogs include extreme panting plus having a dark-red tongue and gums.
