Families will pay a pretty penny to keep their children busy this summer. American Express says families across the country will spend more than $16 billion dollars this summer trying keep their kids occupied. The 2012 summer break is set to cost an average American family 600 dollars. And affluent families are expected to dish out nearly double that amount.
The study looked at a random sample of about two-thousand adults. Most parents say they plan to spend a chunk of that money on trips to places like theme parks. But day camps are expected to be the biggest expense.
For parents who need someone to watch their kids -- that also comes at a cost. American Express says the average family will spend more than $400 on a babysitter this summer.
