EMSA Prepares for Weekend Events

Posted: Updated:

EMSA has issued another heat alert for Friday, which is the start of a weekend full of events. EMSA told Channel 8 Friday it is planning to have crews at these events to keep an eye on things.

Reggaefest made its return to Tulsa after an 11 year hiatus. The concert began at 3 p.m. Friday and runs through Saturday night at Veterans Park. Organizers said they refuse to let the triple digit temps keep the estimated 10,000 attendees from having a good time and enjoying music from famous reggae artists, like Don Carlos.

"The weather is perfect," said organizer Tim Barraza. "It's perfect reggae weather for Jamaica. I mean this is a Jamaican day, you know?"

Barraza said there will be plenty of bottled water, drinking fountains, shaded areas, and a splash pool for kids to help people stay hydrated this weekend. An EMSA crew will be on-site.

"We're not trying to scare people," said EMSA representative Chris Stevens. "That's not our point. Our point is to make sure that while you're doing outdoor activities, especially in these triple digit days, you're doing it correctly and safely. Plenty of water prior to the event."

Stevens said if you will be drinking alcoholic beverages at these events, drink between two and three bottles of water between each one. He also suggests event attendees wear sunscreen, light, loose-fitting clothing, and watch your children closely for signs of heat problems.

Relay for Life organizers are also gearing up for the heat tomorrow at Oneok Field. The event takes place from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. the following day to fundraise for the American Cancer Society.

"It's going to be hot all night for sure," said the event's secretary Will Matthews. "As you know, it's not going to cool down much during the evening, and we're walking on concrete so just staying hydrated, just getting ready."
