African Tortoise Lost On Kansas Farmland

Posted: Updated:

A family in southwest Kansas has lost a beloved pet, but it should be easy to spot.

After all, how many 120-pound tortoises could be on the loose at one time?

Leona and her boyfriend Puck broke out of their pen a week ago near Greensburg in Kiowa County.

Puck turned up quickly, but Leona remains on the run.

Tony Lowery and his wife bought the animals 20-years ago at a pet store and have gotten very attached.

"There's nothing in Kansas that's going to resemble one of these guys." Tony says, "Anytime you have a pet for that length of time, you're going to miss it."

Lowery is worried about a nearby highway and pesticides on a nearby soybean field.

Otherwise, she's pretty safe.. at least until fall when the weather cools off.
