Tulsa -
Our city trash system is in transition. Right now there is no citywide recycling program.
But there is an alternative--with Metropolitan Environmental Trust. Channel 8's Kim Jackson explains you can take your recyclables to one of several centers.
At the M.E.T. they've been very busy with a lot of things they simply can't accept. Number one, plastic bags simply won't work, along with some plastics you'll find in your refrigerator. And they're seeing a lot of tin cans they can't accept.
Navid and James are two dedicated recycling citizens.
"It's not much bother I actually like it," said Navid Amir. The city's recycling program is on hold. So they are bringing their recyclable goods to the MET recycling center.
"I think it's just your part. It's our trash and our environment, so just to do your part to recycle it just takes a bit of effort hat is all," said James Grebb.
They brought their glass, plastics and cardboard only to be told cardboard is not accepted at that location.
"Today this location doesn't take cardboard so two bins of our recyclable cardboard went to the trash."
"We do realize it is an inconvenience and when the city of Tulsa starts their recycling they will be able to take cardboard," explained Annie Brady, of the MET.
The MET has 5 centers in Tulsa and 8 in surrounding communities. Sand Springs and Broken Arrow are the only centers which take cardboard.
"With construction on Broken Arrow expressway, I'm not gonna drive to Sand Springs to recycle cardboard so I was disappointed with today's recycling service," said James.
But he packed up his recyclables and brought them along with many others. Citizens have shown how committed they are to recycling even without curbside service.
This will go on from now. until October, when Tulsa starts it's new trash and recycling service.
