High Temps Have Produce Growers Leery of Continued Heat

The tomatoes are looking plump and delicious, but keeping them like this throughout the season in this heat with this little rain, ain't gonna be easy.

"I'm watering every day," said John McClain, yes, John McClain, as in Die Hard, and like his Hollywood counterpart, he too has had to deal with the criminal element.

"Yeah, they steal them right off your table out there," he said.

His tomatoes, for sale at a reasonable dollar a pound, were disappearing, as if it hasn't been enough to deal with the regular elements.

"Gonna need some hay on top of them cause the tomatoes are burning, sun so hot, burning," he said.

From backyard gardeners like John to larger farmers like Joe Tierney, everyone is hoping this summer is nothing like the last.

"Yeah, it was like everything was under a magnifying glass," said Joe.

Fortunately, even though we've had multiple 100 and above days this year, so far he's got gorgeous tomatoes, and onions.

"Everything's doing pretty good and from all the other farmers I've talked to they seem fairly happy, but everybody's watching the temperatures," he said.

And keeping an eye on their plants, for example, these guys might look exhausted, but they're actually ok.

"If you over water, they'll keep their roots up high, and then when the soil temperatures get real high, then they die, ooh, that's like a good tip for people, yeah," he said.

So water wisely, and if you're thinking of stealing John McClain's tomatoes, wisen up, cause he's watching for ya.

"For two or three days, I hung one of these motion cameras up, like you hunt in the woods. Did you catch anybody? No," he laughed.
