Okmulgee Sheriff Honors Men Who Save Driver From Burning Car

Posted: Updated:

The Okmulgee County Sheriff's Office is recognizing two men for an act of heroism Wednesday morning.

According to reports, around 10:30 A.M. Okmulgee County Dispatch received report of a single car accident on Highway 16 between 320 and 330 road.  The car was off the roadway and appeared to be on fire.

Witness Benjamin Franklin Lane Depew, said that after the vehicle came to rest on the side of the roadway, he and another unknown male approached the driver's side of the car to see if the driver was ok.  They forced the door open and found that the feet of the driver were on fire.

Mr. Lane and the unknown man took the driver from the vehicle and got him away from the flames. Moments later, the grass around the car caught on fire and the men had to drag the victim even further away from the vehicle.

When emergency crews arrived, they were able to treat the driver of the crashed car.  The unknown man who helped Lane left the scene shortly after.

The Okmulgee County Sheriff's Office issued a statement Wednesday morning saying: "Sheriff Eddy Rice and the entire Okmulgee County Sheriff's Office as well as the Twin Hills Fire Department would like to commend Mr. Lane and his unknown co-hero for their gracious act of selflessness. If these two had not acted quickly, the life of the man in the wrecked vehicle would have surely been lost."
