Sand Springs -

A man died following an horrific accident on the Highway 97 bridge over the Arkansas River late Wednesday afternoon.

Sand Springs Police Captain Don Mars told KTUL.com that a man was Northbound approaching the River Bridge when the hood of the car he was driving popped open.

According to Mars, a tan GMC SUV pulled up behind the man's Mitsubishi but stopped.

Capt. Mars said a small commercial garbage truck struck the SUV from behind, causing the SUV to strike the Mitsubishi.

Sand Springs Assistant Police Chief Mike Carter announced Wednesday night that 86-year-old John Maurice Perry of Sand Springs, the driver of the Mitsubishi, was pronounced dead at the scene and was released to the Tulsa County Medical Examiner.

The accident happened around 4:40 p.m. Wednesday.

Mars said there were two young men inside the Mitsubishi. Mars said neither were injured.

He said the driver of the SUV, a pregnant woman, was taken to a local hospital as a precaution due to the stress of the accident.

Mars also said that the driver of the garbage truck was uninjured.

Sand Springs Police closed the northbound lanes of Highway 97 for a short time while they worked to investigate the scene.
