Caitlin Alexander speaks with Michael Bethel
North Tulsa -
It has been a week since a police dog attacked a seven-year-old boy in North Tulsa, but family told Channel 8 Wednesday the ordeal has not yet set in.
The boy, Darrain, is recovering after receiving eight stitches on his leg from the attack. His father, Michael Bethel, said he is still having trouble walking. He said his son is also still having nightmares about the dog.
Recalling the ordeal, Bethel said, "It was like watching a bad movie."
Police brought the dog to Berry Park to assist in the search for a murder suspect. The dog charged at Darrain who was in his driveway preparing to watch the fireworks with his family.
Bethel said once he, his brother, and an officer got the dog off his son, police told him "accidents happen" and did not otherwise appear concerned. Bethel's mother called for an ambulance.
However, Tulsa Police said it has been in touch with Darrain's mother to make sure he is recovering. It also said the dog has an otherwise good history and will remain with the department. However, Police will look into training procedures to make sure an incident like this does not happen again.
