It's the worst case scenarios that make the news. A child left in a car either dead or nearly there. But what about the times of no harm, but still foul?
"If you leave them unattended, you can be cited for it," said TPD officer Craig Murray, touting the benefits of a new Forget-Me-Not vehicle safety ordinance which creates a system of fines for leaving a kid 6 or under in a vehicle alone.
"If someone sees a child sitting in a car, and there's not an adult present we can be called out and issue a citation," he said.
"We actually ran across that type of situation at a parking lot," said Steven Dyer, enjoying the park at 41st and Riverside, with a memory of one of those close call situations.
"We actually pulled up, we were getting some groceries and there was two young kids sitting in the back of a car, and no parents around and it was more towards the end of the summer so it wasn't really too bad, but still, and we sat there about 10 minutes, finally called the police and parents came out, we yelled and screamed at him, tried to get the kids out of the car and he yelled back and just took off. It got a little confrontational. It did, it did," he said.
Under the about to be law, the guy could have been fined anywhere between $50 and $500 dollars. A wake up call before, heaven forbid, the worst.
"There's been a criminal ordinance, that we've always had something we could do with it, but now with it as a traffic ordinance, it's going to make it easier for that officer to take care of the situation," said officer Murray.
