Firefighters began battling a large grass fire Wednesday afternoon in the Stone Canyon Housing area in Owasso.

A Limestone Fire Department representative told Tulsa's Channel 8's crews on the scene that the fire burned 55 to 60 acres.

The fire was believed to be centered near 76th Street North and 177th East Avenue.

Authorities told KTUL.com that crews from the Owasso, Rolling Hills, Collinsville, Catoosa, Limestone, and Verdigris Fire Departments began battling the blaze between 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Wednesday.

One of KTUL's storm chasers reported that vehicles almost caught fire at 193rd East Avenue and 66th Street North.

Tulsa's Channel 8 has crews on the scene reported at 3:50 p.m. that the fire was contained near 193rd East Avenue but that flames were continuing to push north.

The Owasso Police closed 193rd East Avenue between 76th Street North and Highway 266, and they encouraged drivers to avoid that stretch of road.

Tulsa's Channel 8's crews said houses were threatened near 66th Street North.

The Tulsa Area Chapter of the Red Cross was on the scene supporting emergency responders by providing hydrating beverages, snacks, and meals.
