Community Schools: TPS Looking At Bigger Picture

Posted: Updated:

When it comes to educating our children, Tulsa Public Schools are starting to look more at the "bigger picture".

Thursday, they held a conference pushing the idea of "community schools" in our area.

250 educators, students, parents and civic leaders showed up for training.

Community schools address the "whole" child.

Making sure all students are supported in every way, providing physical, social and emotional needs.

It's an effort to boost graduation and to reduce crime.

Lucky Lamons is CEO and President of the Foundation For Tulsa Schools.

"If you're sitting there and you're saying to yourself, some of those families out there aren't taking care of their problems. They're not educating their kids. They're not getting them to school. When they turn 16, and they drop out, they become your problem."

Wednesday's conference was made possible by a grant from the AEP Foundation.
